Grain Terminal Opens in the Port of Kuryk
The first grain shipment has been made from the "Sarzha" grain terminal in the port of Kuryk (Kazakhstan). This was reported to SeaNews by SEMURG INVEST, the project's developer and terminal operator. The first phase of the terminal has a throughput capacity of up to 240,000 tons per year. The full implementation of this project will allow for the transshipment of up to 1.5 million tons of grain annually. The operator notes that the grain terminal at the Multi-Functional Sea Terminal "Sarzha" will play an important role in the development of the Middle Corridor, as it will significantly expand opportunities for grain transshipment and export via the Caspian Sea, enhance the transport efficiency of the route, and increase cargo turnover. SEMURG INVEST, together with its partners, has already built its own 16 km long access railway tracks, two berths, a general cargo terminal, the first phase of the grain terminal, a temporary storage warehouse, and a TIR parking area. As part of the "Sarzha" Multi-Functional Sea Terminal project, several more terminals will be constructed, including a bulk cargo terminal and a universal terminal, as well as a transport and logistics complex. Nurzhan Marabaev, General Director of SEMURG INVEST, noted that the completion of all terminals at the "Sarzha" Multi-Functional Marine Terminal by 2030 will increase the capacity of the Middle Corridor by 11 million tons per year. He also mentioned that operational activities at the general cargo terminal began in November 2023. To date, metals, fertilizers, and grain are being transshipped through the "Sarzha" Multi-Functional Marine Complex. Currently, dredging works are underway in the port's water area, which are expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Upon completion, the port of Kuryk will become one of the deepest ports in the Caspian Sea, the company notes.
